Stop using it. A cracked top can expose live parts. The glass is replaceable, but on some models the price approaches a new cooktop.

What you can safely check
- For a radiant glass cooktop element that will not heat, test the other elements. If only one is dead, the element or its switch has failed.
- Induction cooktops only work with magnetic cookware. Hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it does not stick, the pan will not heat.
- For a microwave that is dead, check the breaker and reset any GFCI outlet in the kitchen. Then leave it for a technician.
- Clean the grease filters under an over-the-range microwave. Clogged filters make the vent fan loud and ineffective.

A countertop microwave is almost always cheaper to replace. An over-the-range or built-in microwave, or a quality cooktop, is usually worth repairing, especially since replacing it often means fitting a new model to the same cabinet cutout.
