An ice maker needs three things: water at enough pressure, a freezer cold enough (around 0°F) and a working module to fill, freeze and eject. When ice stops, one of those three is missing.
In-door ice makers on French door refrigerators have their own quirks, mostly frost and ice jams in the ice compartment. Those are among the most common repairs on newer fridges.

The Lake Michigan water most of this area gets from Chicago runs about 7.6 to 8.8 grains per gallon of hardness (City of Chicago). Over time those minerals narrow the inlet valve and cloud the cubes. Changing the refrigerator filter on schedule protects the valve, and a slowly shrinking cube size is often the first sign it is due.
An ice maker module is a self-contained part, so replacing it is usually straightforward and worth doing on a fridge that otherwise works. The exception is a refrigerator already near the end of its life, where the ice maker is just the first symptom.
