Samsung sells a lot of refrigerators and laundry pairs in the Chicago area, and two problems account for many of the calls: ice makers in French door refrigerators, and washer error codes. Both have well-documented patterns.
If your Samsung is still inside its first year, or it has a component under Samsung’s longer warranty, go through Samsung first. Otherwise, an independent technician is usually faster.
Samsung French door refrigerators and ice makers
Consumer Reports counted 613 complaints to the Consumer Product Safety Commission about Samsung refrigerators from 2019 through 2021, citing icemakers, temperature problems and spoiled food, and reported that the CPSC confirmed it was investigating; Samsung disputed the findings (Consumer Reports). A long-running ice maker class action was dismissed in 2024 after individual settlement offers, with no nationwide class settlement, so there is no general claim to file.
The typical symptoms are ice building up in the ice compartment on the fresh-food door, a jammed ice bucket, water dripping from the ice maker, or a fan noise from the ice room. Error codes 39E (ice maker function), 40E (ice room fan) and 33E (ice pipe heater) point to the same area.
