Dryer repair in Oak Lawn

Clothes still damp after two cycles usually means a restricted vent or a failed heating part. Call and we’ll get a dryer technician to you.

A dryer is a heater, a fan and a drum. When it stops drying, the cause is almost always airflow (lint in the vent), heat (element, igniter, gas valve coils or thermal fuse) or rotation (belt, idler pulley, motor).

Airflow matters more than people think. A clogged vent makes every load take longer, cooks the thermal fuse, and is a real fire risk. That is the first thing to rule out.

Before you call

Rule out airflow first

  • Run the dryer empty on high heat and go outside to the vent hood. You should feel strong, warm airflow. Weak airflow means lint in the duct.
  • Look at the duct behind the dryer. Thin foil or vinyl accordion duct crushes easily and collects lint; rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is the safer choice.
  • Clean the lint screen with a soft brush and warm water if dryer sheets have left a film on it. Hold it under the tap: water should pass through.
  • For an electric dryer that tumbles but will not heat, check the breaker panel. Electric dryers use a double breaker, and if one half trips the drum can still spin with no heat.

Symptoms

Dryer symptoms and likely causes

Check first something you can safely look at yourself · Technician needs tools, parts or testing

Tumbles but no heat

Usual causes: Thermal fuse, heating element (electric), igniter or gas valve coils (gas), half-tripped breaker

A blown thermal fuse is often a symptom of a clogged vent, so replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it will blow again.

Technician

Takes two or three cycles to dry

Usual causes: Restricted vent, failing cycling thermostat, weak igniter

Start with the vent. If airflow is strong and it still takes too long, the heat source is cycling off too early.

Check first

Won’t start at all

Usual causes: Door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, drive motor

On many models a blown thermal fuse stops the motor completely, so a dead dryer can still be a heat-related failure.

Technician

Squealing or thumping

Usual causes: Idler pulley, drum rollers, drive belt, drum glides

A high squeal is typically the idler pulley. Rhythmic thumping is often a flat spot on a roller or a worn belt.

Technician

Burning smell

Usual causes: Lint near the heater, a foreign object in the drum, motor overheating

Stop using the dryer. Lint buildup around the heating element or burner is a fire hazard.

Technician

Stops mid-cycle

Usual causes: Overheating motor, moisture sensor, control board

A dryer that shuts off after 10 to 20 minutes and restarts once cooled is usually overheating, often from poor airflow.

Gas dryers in the southwest suburbs

Many homes in the area have gas dryers. If you smell gas (a rotten-egg odor) around a gas dryer, do not run it or flip switches. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside: Nicor Gas in the suburbs, Peoples Gas inside Chicago. A dryer technician is the right call for a dryer that will not heat, not for a suspected leak.

Long dryer vent runs through basement joists are common in older bungalows. The longer and more bent the run, the more often it needs cleaning.

Worth fixing?

Dryers are among the most repairable appliances. Belts, rollers, fuses, elements and igniters are inexpensive parts, so repair usually wins unless the drum or motor has failed on an old machine.

Dryers covered

Gas and electric dryers from Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung, LG, GE, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux and Speed Queen, plus heat-pump and ventless condenser dryers.

Dryer Repair: questions people ask

Why does my dryer not heat?
On an electric dryer, the usual causes are a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element or a half-tripped breaker. On a gas dryer, a weak igniter or failed gas valve coils. A blown fuse often means the vent is clogged.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
At least once a year for a typical household, and more often with long duct runs, pets or heavy use. The lint screen should be cleaned every load.
Can you repair a gas dryer?
Yes. Gas dryer repairs (igniter, gas valve coils, flame sensor) are routine. A gas leak is different: that is a call to the gas utility first (Nicor Gas in the suburbs, Peoples Gas in Chicago).
