What appliance repair costs
National price ranges by appliance and by part, from named sources, plus what moves a quote up or down. Most repairs land between about $100 and $400.
How a repair bill is built
Almost every appliance repair invoice has three parts: the diagnostic or trip fee, the part, and labor. The diagnostic fee is charged whether or not you go ahead; many technicians credit it toward the repair if you do.
Parts vary more than labor. A dryer thermal fuse costs a few dollars; a refrigerator compressor costs hundreds before anyone picks up a tool. That is why two “refrigerator repairs” can differ by a thousand dollars.
What pushes a quote up
- Sealed-system work on refrigerators and freezers (compressor, refrigerant leak).
- Control boards on any appliance.
- Built-in, panel-ready and high-end brands, where parts cost more and access takes longer.
- Gas appliances, which HomeAdvisor and Fixr both price above electric.
- Evening, weekend or emergency visits. HomeGuide puts emergency call-out fees at $140 to $400.
- A part that has to be ordered, which means a second visit.

Cost publishers survey different jobs over different years, so their ranges do not line up. We show them side by side rather than averaging them into a number no one actually published.

Is the repair worth it?
Consumer Reports’ rule of thumb is not to spend more than 50 percent of the cost of a new appliance repairing an old one. The repair or replace guide adds lifespans, energy costs and the ComEd rebates that change the math on washers and dryers.
