Ovens are simpler than they look. An electric oven heats with a bake element and a broil element controlled by a temperature sensor and a board. A gas oven uses an igniter that has to get hot enough to open the gas valve. Most failures are one of those parts.
Gas ranges carry one extra rule: if you smell gas, stop. Everything else on this page assumes there is no gas odor.

Usual causes: Bake element, temperature sensor, relay on the control board, thermal fuse
If the broil works but bake does not, the bake element is the likely part.

Use an oven thermometer. Many ovens let you adjust a temperature offset in the settings menu. If it is off by more than the offset allows, the sensor may be failing.

The high heat of a self-clean cycle is a common trigger for fuse and board failures. Wiping the oven by hand is gentler on older ranges.

If you smell gas, do not use any switch, phone or appliance inside the home. Leave, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside. In the suburbs, Nicor Gas’s 24-hour emergency line is 888-642-6748; inside Chicago, gas service is Peoples Gas. A carbon monoxide alarm near the kitchen and each sleeping area is cheap insurance with any gas appliance.

Safe checks at home
- Look at the bake element on an electric oven. Blistering, a visible break, or a spot that glowed brighter than the rest before it failed means the element is done.
- On a gas oven, watch the igniter through the window. If it glows but the burner does not light within about 90 seconds, the igniter is usually too weak to open the valve.
- For surface burners that click but will not light, remove the cap and dry the burner. Spills and cleaning water are the most common cause.
- Check that the oven is not in Sabbath mode, a control lock or a delayed-start setting.

Ranges last a long time, and most parts are affordable. Igniters, elements, sensors and burner switches are almost always worth repairing. A failed main control board on an older electronic range is the most common case where replacement is worth pricing out.

How much does oven repair cost?

Is it safe to use my gas oven if the igniter is weak?
The gas safety valve will not open unless the igniter draws enough current, so a weak igniter normally just means no heat. If you ever smell gas, leave and call your gas utility from outside.
Do you repair wall ovens and double ovens?
Yes. Built-in ovens sometimes need to be pulled from the cabinet for access, which the technician will explain when they quote.
