Garbage disposals are simple machines, and many problems can be cleared in a few minutes without tools. The two that cannot are leaks from the body of the unit and a motor that has burned out; both usually mean replacement rather than repair.

Safe reset and unjam
- Turn off the disposal switch and unplug it under the sink (or switch off the breaker if it is hardwired).
- Insert a hex key (most disposals take a 1/4 inch Allen key) into the socket on the bottom center of the unit and work it back and forth until it turns freely.
- Use tongs or pliers to remove anything you can see in the chamber. Never your hand.
- Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, restore power and run cold water before switching it on.
